Air & Media Consumption Charts

Consumption Charts

How much air and media are consumed with a 14 CFM 1/4″ ID nozzle combination? Other combinations too! Use these charts to estimate air compressor requirements and media consumption for your sandblasting operation.

Air Consumption by Nozzle Size

The following table shows approximate air consumption (in CFM) for various nozzle sizes at standard operating pressures.

Nozzle ID (inches) Air Consumption @ 80 PSI (CFM) Air Consumption @ 90 PSI (CFM) Air Consumption @ 100 PSI (CFM)
1/8" 25 28 32
3/16" 50 56 65
1/4" 90 100 115
5/16" 140 155 175
3/8" 200 225 255
1/2" 350 395 450

Media Consumption by Application

Media consumption varies based on application type, media type, and intensity of use. These are approximate guidelines.

Application Media Type Estimated Consumption (lbs/hour)
Light Cleaning Glass Beads 20-40
Light Cleaning Aluminum Oxide 30-60
Rust Removal Aluminum Oxide 50-100
Paint Removal Aluminum Oxide 60-120
Heavy Cutting Silicon Carbide 40-80
Polishing/Finishing Glass Beads 15-30

Calculating Requirements

Determining Compressor Size

Select an air compressor rated for at least the CFM consumption of your nozzle at your intended operating pressure. For continuous operation, add 20% overhead to account for fluctuations. For the popular 1/4" nozzle at 90 PSI (100 CFM), a 120 CFM compressor would be appropriate for continuous work.

Estimating Media Needs

Multiply the consumption rate by your expected operating hours. For example, if you're doing light cleaning with glass beads (30 lbs/hour) for 8 hours, you'll need 240 lbs of media. Note that reusable media (glass beads, garnet) can be recycled multiple times, reducing long-term costs.

Dust Collection Sizing

Dust collectors should be rated for at least 1.5 times your cabinet's air input to ensure adequate removal of spent media and particulates. Undersized dust collection leads to poor visibility and filter clogging.
